How to get great sound in your recording space

Hi Reader,

One of the biggest upgrades you can make to your podcast has nothing to do with your mic.

It’s your room.

Because even the best microphone can sound cheap if you’re recording in a boomy, echoey, untreated space.

So let’s break this down and help you get the best sound for your room, no matter what your budget is.

Soundproofing vs. Sound Treatment

Soundproofing = keeping outside noises out (traffic, dogs, neighbours). This usually requires construction-level work and a big budget.

Sound treatment = controlling how sound behaves inside your space. This is what podcasters actually need - to reduce echo, reverb, and reflections so your voice sounds clear and professional.

Budget-Friendly (or Zero Budget) Fixes

  • Record in your closet, surrounded by clothes - they make for great natural sound absorbers.
  • Hang heavy blankets or duvets behind and around you.
  • Put down rugs if you have hardwood or tile floors.
  • Use pillows around your mic area to absorb reflections.

Cost: $0-$50, and surprisingly effective.

Mid-Budget Options

  • Acoustic foam panels (yes, they do work — but only for mid/high frequencies).
  • Better: look for rockwool or fibreglass panels with fabric covering, since they absorb a wider range of sound.
  • Bass traps in corners if your space feels “boomy.”

Cost: $100-$500, depending on how much coverage you want.

High-End / Pro Level

  • Full acoustic treatment with custom panels and bass traps designed for your specific room.
  • Professional diffusers to balance the sound without making it “dead.”
  • Quiet HVAC or dedicated soundproof booth.

Cost: $1,000+, but you’ll be recording in a studio-grade environment.

So... do you need all this?

Not really. For most podcasters, smart use of soft furnishings or a few budget panels is enough.

But the key takeaway: treat your space, not just your mic.

Even a $50 microphone in a treated room can sound better than a $500 mic in a bad room.

Until the next time, happy podcasting.

Hi Reader, If you’ve been podcasting for a while, you’ve probably seen the advice: “Hack your growth.” “Explode your downloads.” “Go viral.” And, sure, that all sounds great in theory. Hi Reader, When you think of great brands, what comes to mind? Maybe it’s Apple, where the packaging feels as carefully designed as the product.Maybe it’s Spotify, where discovering new music feels natural and frictionless.Or maybe it’s something as simple as your favourite coffee shop, where the barista remembers your order. What all of these have in common is user experience (UX). They’ve thought beyond the product itself, and into how people feel when they interact with it. And podcasting...
